Which UUID version should I use?
UUID v4 is random and the default choice for IDs that only need to be unique. UUID v7 embeds a millisecond timestamp first, so values sort by creation time — use it for database primary keys, where it keeps index inserts sequential and fast.
UUID v3 and v5 are derived from a namespace and a name, so the same input always gives the same UUID — useful for stable IDs built from a URL or email address (prefer v5, which uses SHA-1, over v3's MD5). UUID v1 encodes a timestamp and node, and ULID is a sortable, 26-character alternative that is easier to read in URLs.
UUID or GUID?
They are the same thing: GUID is Microsoft's name for a UUID. A GUID from the GUID Generator is a standard 128-bit UUID, usable anywhere a UUID is expected.
