Mcp Generator

What is MCP (Model Context Protocol)?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that defines how AI applications communicate with external tools and services. Think of it as a "USB-C port for AI" — instead of every AI app building custom integrations for every tool, MCP provides a single, standardized protocol.

How It Works

  1. You configure an MCP server — a small program that connects to a specific service (GitHub, a database, Slack, etc.)
  2. Your AI app starts the server — when you launch Claude Desktop, Cursor, or another MCP-compatible app
  3. The server exposes capabilities — the AI can now read data, perform actions, or query information through that server
  4. The server runs locally — your data stays on your machine, and credentials are never sent to third parties

Common MCP Use Cases

What You Want To Do Recommended Server Risk Level
Browse GitHub repos, issues, and PRs GitHub MCP Server Medium
Query and analyze databases PostgreSQL or SQLite Server High
Read and edit project files Filesystem Server High
Browse websites and take screenshots Browser Automation Server Medium
Give your AI persistent memory Memory Knowledge Graph Low
Search and send Slack messages Slack Server Medium
Read and create Notion pages Notion Server Medium
Analyze Sentry errors and issues Sentry Server Low

Why Use This Config Generator?

No MCP Knowledge Required

The guided wizard asks simple questions — what do you want to connect, what AI app do you use, what operating system — and generates the correct configuration. You never need to learn MCP JSON syntax.

Built-in Security Understanding

Every server template includes a clear security summary showing:

  • Risk level (Low / Medium / High)
  • What data can be read
  • What data can be modified
  • What cannot be accessed

Multi-Client Support

Generated configs work with all major MCP-compatible clients:

Client Config File Location
Claude Desktop claude_desktop_config.json
OpenCode opencode.json
Cursor .cursor/mcp.json
VS Code settings.json (with MCP extension)

Health Checks & Validation

After generating a config, the tool automatically checks for:

  • Missing required environment variables
  • Missing dependencies (Node.js, Python, uv)
  • OS-specific considerations (Windows vs macOS vs Linux paths)
  • Configuration format correctness

Installation Quick Reference

Claude Desktop

macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json

Cursor

.cursor/mcp.json in your project root directory

VS Code

Open settings.json via Ctrl+Shift+P > "Preferences: Open Settings (JSON)" and add the config under the mcp.servers key

Security Best Practices

  1. Use dedicated tokens: Create API tokens with minimal required scopes instead of using personal access tokens
  2. Read-only when possible: For databases, create a read-only user if you only need query access
  3. Restrict filesystem access: Only grant access to directories the AI actually needs to read
  4. Review permissions: Check the Permissions Summary before adding any MCP server
  5. Revoke unused access: Remove MCP server configs you no longer use
  6. Keep tokens secret: MCP configs contain tokens — don't commit them to version control
